In High School, I was luck enough to be chosen to be a part of a program called "Open Doors." Through the program, a select few other students and myself got to see a variety of Broadway Shows for free.
I was accepted to the program my senior year of High School, and the first show I went to see was "Spring Awakening." Spring Awakening is a rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. The play was n late-19th century Germany, the musical tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of their sexuality.
We had incredible seats. We were in row F, center stage. The show was about 2 hours long, with fantastic acting by an amazing ensemble. It even had Leia Michelle (from Glee) in the original production.
After the show, my group and I had a discussion about the play and its implications to modern society (it was a requirement for the program) over a couple of slices of pepperoni pizza.
Following Spring Awakening, my group and I went on to see a number of other shows, but none compared to the wonder of the first.
My first broadway show was Brigadoon. Firsts are always memorable! not necessarily "the best", but memorable.
