In 1959, Fidel Castro took over Cuba, making it a communist country. Many families were affected by him and all the horrible trouble he caused. In 1969, my mother's family decided they couldn't take it anymore and decided to leave the country before it got worse. At that time, Fidel made a law that all Doctors had to stay in Cuba. My grandfather, unfortunately, was one of them. My mother told me that he forced my family to leave Cuba and promised to meet the family as soon as he could make it to America. Months went by without a word from my grandfather. Then one day, my grandmother received a phone call from a friend saying he was in Chicago! Turns out, my grandfather swam with three other doctors, all of who taped their diplomas and money to their stomachs. In our family, my grandfather will always be known as someone who was undefeated by Fidel Castro, and I am very proud to be his granddaughter.
